RESTLESS EARTH set to release in #NEW series by @JohnDolanAuthor

To say I’m a fan of John Dolan’s writing would be a gross understatement. He hooked me with his debut novel, Everyone Burns from his Time, Blood and Karma series, and I’ve been happily under his spell ever since.

Now, Mr. Dolan is embarking on a new series called Karma’s Children, with Restless Earth launching November 24th.

This latest book also pulls in elements from his first series.

Am I surprised?

No.

If you’ve read any of John’s first four books, you will know how twisty they can be. He’s proven himself a master of deception with a flair for unpredictable plots. He moves his characters from book to book like a chess player moves pieces across a board—carefully, with an eye for impending danger.

He’s also been known to sacrifice a few characters along the way, but I digress … 😉

I had the great pleasure of chatting with the author recently. Find out what he had to say about his writing, women, and life in general.

* * * *

Welcome John, and congratulations on the upcoming release of Restless Earth! This book is the first in a series called Karma’s Children. Can you tell us how this new series relates to Time, Blood and Karma?

Good question, Eden. My original concept for the Time, Blood and Karma series was that it would run to seven books. However, the end of Book 4 (Running on Emptiness) was a natural watershed, so I decided to split the work into two series, with the second series starting with Restless Earth. The series title, Karma’s Children, was meant to invoke the first series, HOWEVER, I have constructed Restless Earth in such a way that those readers who are new to my writing can start with it, while those hardy souls who have ploughed through all four books in the first series will see it as picking up where Running on Emptiness left off. I hope that makes sense. If it doesn’t, it’s too late now!

No, it makes perfect sense! It’s great that new readers can hop on board with Restless Earth even if they haven’t read your previous books. I am intrigued, however, by the blurb for the new book. It speaks of four different men but does not mention women at all. Are there any women in this book?

There decidedly are women in this book. In fact, it is the females – some of whom are ‘offstage’ – who are the main catalysts for much of what happens in the novel. As in my earlier books, there are a number of strong female characters in Restless Earth. The men absolutely do not get everything their own way. Quite the reverse. Just like in real life, eh? You ladies are really the ones in charge: we men are just stupid enough to believe our own propaganda.

Ha, I’m sure women are going to love this book then! I, for one, fell in love with David Braddock, your smart-talking, somewhat damaged detective from the Time, Blood and Karma novels. Can we expect another equally fascinating character in Restless Earth?

I’m flattered that you fell in love with Braddock, warts and all. He can be an irritating smarty-pants at times (much like his creator), but generally readers seem to root for him. However, to answer your question, Braddock himself returns – perhaps somewhat chastened by his earlier experiences – as do some of the characters from the earlier novels. But there are new characters too, of various nationalities, age and sex. As to how ‘fascinating’ they are, I will leave that to the readers to decide. You can, however, expect to encounter a certain amount of mystery, moral ambiguity and black humour in this book. If you are looking for a straightforward goodies vs. baddies story, you might struggle a bit. As it says in the publicity blurb for Restless Earth: “It’s not always easy to tell the good guys from the bad guys. And sometimes, there are no good guys.” Real life is rarely black and white, in my experience, so if you want your fiction to reflect this aspect of reality, you need to mix up the black and white into shades of grey (though not fifty shades, perhaps!).

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, John. Your books are definitely not 50 shades of grey! Personally, I prefer my fiction a bit “messy” and true to life. That you treat readers as intelligent people who can think for themselves is what I appreciate most about your writing.

Readers, please continue on to learn more about Restless Earth and special offers from the author.

.@JohnDolanAuthor releases RUNNING ON EMPTINESS ~ his 4th novel in the Time, Blood and Karma series

One of my favourite people, John Dolan, has just released his highly anticipated fourth book called Running on Emptiness for the Time, Blood and Karma series.

As he describes it, the series appeals to lovers of: mystery, thriller, crime, Thailand fiction, private investigators, British detectives, and amateur sleuths.

The book also marks the welcome return of David Braddock, Dolan’s charismatic anti-hero.

I interviewed the author in 2013. If you missed it, hop over now and have a read.

I was fortunate enough to grab an early copy of the book and can’t wait to read it.

Now, let’s learn more about Running on Emptiness.

It is the summer of 2006. In Thailand, the army makes preparations to overthrow the elected government of Thaksin Shinawatra.

Against this backdrop of political turmoil, destinies are shaped as events ensnare a corrupt Police Chief and his dying wife, two warring drug lords, an embittered widow, and a vengeful gangster.

While dreams and obsessions play out on the streets of Bangkok, private detective David Braddock finds himself mired in guilt. The ghosts of his past misdeeds are coming home, and they are bringing devastation in their wake.

Running on Emptiness is the fourth volume in the ‘Time, Blood and Karma’ series.

@JohnDolanAuthor and @FionaQuinnBooks create CHAOS together

Two authors, whom I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing and reading, have joined creative forces to write a book.

Chaos is Come Again, courtesy of John Dolan and Fiona Quinn, officially releases today to glowing reviews.

Read my review below, and don’t miss this one!

chaos banner 1

CHAOS IS COME AGAIN is off-the-wall addictive!

In Chaos is Come Again, an oddball mix of characters converge in a tale replete with human foibles, a serial killer, and a fantastical love story. While merging the outlandish with the sacred and the absurd with the believable, it unapologetically tramples political correctness to a pulp.

There are so many unique hooks to pull you in.

Sensationalist author, Travis Bishop, is hiding in London after fleeing death threats from his home country. Some of his fellow Americans are not taking kindly to his blasphemous re-invention of Judas as a saint and Jesus as a vampire. Of course, his publisher demands an immediate sequel to his masterpiece.

Then there’s Teagan. Not since Stephen King’s, Annie Wilkes, have I met such an unforgettable villainess. She is no masterpiece, but she is certainly a piece of work.

And how about a modern-day romance spawned on Twitter? Two people bantering from opposite sides of the world with only 140 characters—flirtatious and fun, but can it lead to love? In reading their conversations, one might think it bizarrely possible.

And there’s more, much more …

Despite the intricate dance of deception and obsession throughout multiple story threads, the mood of the book is defiantly upbeat. This can only be attributed to the propulsive storytelling of its authors. Much in the style of Tom Robbins, the pairing of John Dolan and Fiona Quinn has created a novel that defies genre and easy summation. You must read the book to experience its indescribable chaos, so do yourself a favour and grab a copy!

PS. Just when you thought 42 was the answer to everything, you’ll discover 23 is actually the ultimate meaning of life.

“Excellent wretch! Perdition catch my soul
But I do love thee! And when I love thee not
Chaos is come again.”

Sean hears voices in his head.
Travis snorts cocaine.
Teagan thinks she’s the next Lady Gaga.
Avery has the boss from Hell and a mother with dementia.
And Goose thinks he can catch a serial killer.

‘Chaos is Come Again’ is a psychological suspense, a mystery, and a love story – loaded with irreverent humour, and viewed through the lens of obsession.

WARNING: This book contains references to Judas Iscariot, a dwarf and a performing monkey.

apt

“You kill my wife and I’ll kill yours.” You must admit, as a proposition, it has an alluring symmetry to it.

It is 1999, and as the Millennium approaches, old certainties wither. For family man, David Braddock, his hitherto predictable world is undergoing a slow collapse. The people closest to him seem suddenly different. As desires and aspirations tangle around each other like parasite stems, betrayal is in the air.

And so is murder.

Fans of Braddock will finally learn the sequence of events that drove him into exile in Asia, while for new readers, A Poison Tree is the perfect introduction to the ‘Time, Blood and Karma’ series.

My 5-star review for A Poison Tree

A Poison Tree, the third book in the Time, Blood and Karma series for author John Dolan is actually a prequel. It tells the story of how the main character, David Braddock came to be in Thailand.

It is also my favourite of the three books so far. I know I’m giving away a lot here. It’s akin to choosing a favourite child—you’re not supposed to do it, but …

Everyone Burns kicked off the series and captivated me based on a strong protagonist in an exotic land. Hungry Ghosts continued the trend with more shenanigans and provided further insight into David Braddock’s mind.

In A Poison Tree, the setting has moved from Thailand to England. We are taken back in time (1999 – 2001) to where David Braddock grew up, got married, and led a ‘normal’ life before something happened to him, causing him to flee to Southeast Asia. That something is revealed in this book. The tale is fascinating, twisted, and unpredictable.

The intricate story of David and his wife Claire drew me in from the start. It was a complex relationship of secrets and lies, but in the end, it was a love story. I’m a sucker for a love story. I challenge anyone not to be when it’s written with poignant detail, yet never spirals into over-sentimentality.  If you don’t feel your throat clenching or your heart sinking while reading some of the passages, I’d suggest checking to make sure you still have a pulse.

With colourful characters and a criminal element dished out in subtle narrative, A Poison Tree is an angst-filled journey guided by cunning misdirection. For lovers of mystery and thriller novels, there is plenty of intrigue and moments of “I DID NOT see that coming.” What’s more, the atmospheric pace counterpoints perfectly with noir-ish undertones.

Even though each of Mr. Dolan’s books stands on its own, I loved reading them in the order he wrote them. He drew me in so cleverly with his first two books, and A Poison Tree answered the outstanding questions.

What a joy to discover a series that only keeps getting better.

Read my review of HUNGRY GHOSTS by @JohnDolanAuthor

Last week, I announced the release of John Dolan’s second book in his Time, Blood and Karma series called Hungry Ghosts.

I enjoyed a short trip away from the city and had a couple of days to read the book. You can find my review below and on:

Amazon US  |  Amazon UK  |  Goodreads

flourish

The “anti-hero” is a character archetype that dates back to the tragedies of Greek theatre. Unlike the traditional hero who is morally upright, the anti-hero usually has a flawed moral character, more interested in getting the job done than doing it ethically. Sometimes, the flaws are simply human failings as determined by a conventional society—a philanderer, an alcoholic, a smoker.

I don’t believe in heroes, but I believe in David Braddock, the enigmatic anti-hero who returns in John Dolan’s latest release, Hungry Ghosts.

Everyone Burns, which launched the Time, Blood and Karma series, captivated me based on the strength of its characters. I invested in their lives and wanted to know more about their connections to one other. Along with discovering how morally ambiguous human beings can be, I found myself immersed in a sophisticated plot of intrigue in beautiful Thailand.

Hungry Ghosts expands on and refines the characterization. Many familiar faces return, and this time, we hear their voices through their own lens. The switch from David Braddock’s first person viewpoint in Everyone Burns to multiple points of view in this book had to be a challenge to write. It could easily have turned into a “dog’s breakfast” in the hands of a lesser writer.

So, how does Mr. Dolan get away with it?

He imbues each character with just enough detail to reel us in, and then he allows them to speak. Whether he is speaking as the power-hungry Thai Police Chief, the demure Balinese housekeeper, or the playful English sister-in-law, the transitions are seamless and the voices, believable. The recurring theme of hungry ghosts (in its many iterations) haunts everyone, reinforces karmic interconnectivity, and moves the story forward.

Multiple plot threads are dangled, and at the nexus of it all hangs David Braddock. Though still a smarty-pants, he has tempered somewhat. In other words, he has matured.

Characters who emanate moral purity don’t ring true to us any more, if they ever did. It’s not who we see around us, and I dare say, neither is it who we see when we look in the mirror. The longer we live, the more we realize how fragile humanity is. Sometimes it feels broken.

David Braddock feels broken too, but we desperately wish to see him healed. We cheer for him and want him to succeed because of his human frailties, not in spite of them.

Hungry Ghosts is seductive and exotic, yet easily accessible because of its unforgettable anti-hero.

I applaud Mr. Dolan for creating David Braddock. I can’t wait to find out what he does next.
