Music Monday celebrates Memorial Day in #NYC with #America

This is the third time I’m featuring First Aid Kit, Swedish sisters who sing wonderful harmonies. I’m in New York City enjoying the Memorial Day long weekend, Fleet Week, and time with family and friends.

This classic tune written by Paul Simon is a reminder that the themes of optimism and hope never grow old. I thought its melancholic mood a fitting one as Americans remember those who died serving in the United States armed forces.

Enjoy the sweet sound and lyrics of “America” and have a good week ahead,

Music for Memorial Day ~ Fortunate Son

It’s Memorial Day in the US … Putting politics aside, this is a  great song  with a strong history.

Fortunate Son by CCR

Some folks are born made to wave the flag
Ooh, they’re red, white and blue
And when the band plays “Hail to the Chief”
Oh, they point the cannon at you, Lord

It ain’t me, it ain’t me
I ain’t no Senator’s son
It ain’t me, it ain’t me
I ain’t no fortunate one, no …

Musical Mondays – Gloria Gaynor

When I first chose this song for the last Monday of May, I didn’t realize at the time, it would fall on Memorial Day in America. Part of me wanted to delay the post, but then it seemed almost fitting I had chosen a song  about survival.

Gloria Gaynor’s hit, “I Will Survive” was released in 1978 at the height of the disco era. I was too young at the time to have experienced what she sings about in her song: heartache at the hands of a lover who leaves her. Since then, of course, I’ve lived a little, but for me, this song will never be about surviving the end of a relationship.

It was a song a friend re-introduced me to in 2000 when I was  diagnosed with cancer, so it will always remind me of what I went through to be here today.

Despite that I’m no longer a fan of disco, this song still moves me. It’s one for all survivors, whether it be of a broken relationship, illness, or … just another day.

And to my American friends: May you honor your heroes, those who have fallen and those who continue to fight.
