I horked up a phlegmy gob and spit it in my hand. It jiggled like lime-green silly putty. An infection. Fuck. No surprise given two weeks without sleep to meet an impossible deadline. I popped a honey lozenge and sucked it against the roof of my mouth. Medicinal saliva coated my throat providing some relief, but not much.

My eyes watered as I reread the transcripts for the umpteenth time—witness testimony, family impact statements, defense and prosecution documents. Deciding life imprisonment or death for a fifteen-year-old child. What had become of our civilization?

The chokehold around my throat intensified.

She winced, could barely look at him. “Do you really expect to please me with that?”

“Oh ye of little faith,” he said in a squeaky high-pitched voice. His eyes glistened as he admired the raven-haired beauty. “You’ll see stars after this is over.”

She smirked, turned on her heel, and strutted into the washroom. Upon undressing, she prayed the lights would be off when she opened the door. They weren’t.

“Is this better?” He greeted her full frontal, naked, hands on his hips—all four feet of him.

Her eyes bulged, her hand flew to her chest. “Oh my god.”

I stumbled out of the hut and on to the beach. The sun was setting, and it looked huge–bigger and more fiery than I’d ever seen it. I reached out to touch it and saw my hand push right through it. The orange and red morphed around my fingers and pulled me in. I grabbed it with my fist and ran toward it, holding it as it slowly sunk lower behind the horizon.

An incoming wave splashed my feet and up my ankles. I immediately stopped to watch the water recede. When I looked up, the giant orb had disappeared.

I bang my head against the desk—twice—still numb. My lower lip curls under my front teeth, and I bite down hard and taste blood. At least one of my senses is intact.

Cramped legs, aching back, and blurred vision set in. The empty bottle of bourbon ferments inside me. I hear my name but ignore it. Instead, I paw the keyboard until my finger depresses the letter “z” and watch it fill up the screen for several lines.

“James,” she screams again. “Come to bed. You can finish your damn masterpiece tomorrow!”

I grunt and black out atop my keyboard.

Introducing “100 Word Song”

I’m taking part in a 100-word song challenge initiated by Lance of My Blog Can Beat Up Your Blog. It ‘s a great way to hone writing skills when you’re limited to a specific word count.

Lance always has a soundtrack, and for this challenge, he even has a 100 word song robot, Leeroy. This story is inspired by Elton John’s  “Take Me To The Pilot”.

Follow Lance at @tlanceb on Twitter, and take the challenge. It’s fun!

Enjoy,

“Take me to the pilot.”
“What’s wrong?” The flight attendant looked at me dismissively.
“We’re off course.”
“I can assure you that—”
“Don’t assure me.” I got up and pushed her out the way.
She screamed after me. “Stop!”
Running up the aisle, I pulled open the curtain segregating coach from first class and proceeded to bang on the cockpit door.
“Why are you flying over the Atlantic?” I yelled.
I turned to stare at the frightened faces in first class.
One Asian lady said, “We fly to Cambodia … need to go over Atlantic.”
“Cambodia? I’m going to Canada.”
